ふたりめの娘が生まれるまで、年に4〜5回はキャンプに行ってました。
北海道に暮らすキャンプ好きの人たちは毎週のように行きますし、
本当に好きな人は雪の中にもテントを張るようですが、そこまでのキャンプフリークではないし、だいたい虫が苦手。

トイレがきれいで設備の整ったオートキャンプ場にしか行かないので、
キャンプというより、芝生にテントを張ってバーベキューをするというのが正確なところ。

2000年の夏のある日、娘の友人家族と羊蹄山のふもとにあるキャンプ場へ。

すぐそばに登山口があったので、子どもたちを連れて少しだけ歩いてみました。登山道といってもすぐに道なき道。上り坂は突然急な斜面に。本格的な登山の経験はなかったので、そのたいへんさを思い知りました。

でも森は、公園などとは違ってまさに“うっそうとした”という表現がぴったり。
奥深くて密度のある植物たちに囲まれると感動を通り越して恐いぐらい。
北海道に住んでいても本当の自然には慣れていないかも。

スニーカーを泥だらけにして二号目ぐらいまで行って見回すとどこもいいヴィジュアルになりそう。
遠くにどこかの建物が見えたりしなくて、画面はすべてが植物と土と空だけ。
これは使わない手はないなと、翌週一人でカメラをかかえて同じ場所へ。
車の運転は嫌いなのに2時間もかけてよく行ったよね。

森をヴィジュアルに使うなら「森を建てよう」をキャッチフレーズにしているHOP（ハウジングオペレーション）しかないだろうと
カレンダーに仕立ててみました。

1枚の写真を使ってB1サイズ４枚を組み合わせた大きさに。なので高さは2メートル以上。
35mmのポジフィルムで撮影しましたが、思った以上に再現できてけっこう驚き。
1枚に3ヶ月分の玉（カレンダーの数字部分）を入れてます。
ばらしても使えるけれど、やっぱり4枚並べたほうが迫力あるでしょ。
そんなもの貼れる人いないんですけどね。

玉は普通に並べてもつまらないので、森を演出できるようにクモの巣を使って。
虫のなかでも特にクモは嫌いですが、クモも森の大事な構成要員。

だけどちょっと木の間なんかに入って顔に糸がついたりしただけで背筋が凍りそうですよ。
そんな弱虫だからほんとのキャンプなんてできる訳ないんですよね。

Until my second daughter was born, I used to camp 4 or 5 times a year. Campers in Hokkaido often go camping every week, and some of them camp even in the snow.But I’m not that camp freak and hate bugs in general. So I go only to the auto-camping site with clean toilet and other facilities. Correctly, what I do can’t be called a camp but a barbeque under a tent on a lawn.

On one summer day in 2000, we went to a camp on a foot of Mt. Yotei with a family of my daughter’s friend. As a start of a trail up the mountain close by, I took a walk with children. The trail soon turns to a natural path, and the uphill to be a steep slope.I’ve never really climbed a mountain and understood its difficulty.Not like a park, the forest is right with an expression “dense.” Being surrounded in deep and dense plants, it is beyond impressed to scary.Even living in Hokkaido, we may not used to the real nature.

Climbing up to the second of the mountain’s ten-stage ascent and when sneakers are getting dirty, anything you see from there can be used for visual ideas. No buildings are seen even in far away, and there are only plants, ground, and sky in a picture. I thought I should catch and use this image, and then went there alone with a camera next week again. It still amazes myself to drive 2 hours for one way to get there, and I don’t even like to drive.

To use the forest for the visual image, the best client must be the HOP (Housing Operation) as their catch-phrase is “Let’s build forests,” and made it into their calendar.

One picture was divined into four B1-size, resulting its height to be over 2m. It was taken with 35mm positive film, and surprisingly well reproduced. In one calendar piece, dates for three months were indicated. It was possible to use one by one, but so powerful to put all four pieces, thought no one might able to do that. Because it was not interesting to express dates in normal way, I used cobwebs to interpret the forest. I don’t like spiders among bugs particularly, but they are also important members for the forest.

Still it gives me a chilling feeling when the film touches my face even lightly in woods. As a such a sissy, the real camping is not for me.
