同い年の写真家、米山ヒトシさんとは広告代理店時代からよく組んで仕事をしてきました。
90年代はじめ頃から彼は年に数回スリランカに行くようになり、現地の子供たちの写真を撮りためていました。
あるときその写真を使ってカレンダーを作り、その収益で現地に支援をしたいと僕に相談に来たんです。
1996年だったと思います。
写真を見せてもらうと貧困の中にいる子供たちの幸せそうな笑顔に癒されました。
見るのもつらい写真だろうと予想していたのにどれも明るい表情だったんです。
話を聞くと、物がなかった自分の子供の頃を思い出しました。
着る服やお菓子やゲームがなくても毎日楽しかったんですよ。
物や情報が多いことが幸せにつながるとは限らない気もします。

ひとつ、彼に聞いてずっと忘れられないエピソードがあります。
ある小学校を彼が訪ねてクラス全員に鉛筆を渡そうとしたとき、数本足りなかったらしいんですね。
そうしたら子供たちが口を揃えて「もらえない人がいるならいらない」と言ったそうなんです。

ほとんど物のないその町で鉛筆は貴重で、子供たちにとってもすごいプレゼントなはずなんです。
でも大事なのは物より友達なんですね。

そういった話を聞いて僕も応援したくなりました。

ひとりでデザインしても広がらないので12人のアートディレクターの方々に声をかけて、
ひとりひと月ずつ担当してもらいました。なので毎月違うデザインなんですね。もちろん無報酬です。

この取り組みは５年続いてスリランカに幼稚園を2軒建てることができました。
このとき参加してくれたみなさんはチームとして気持ちがまとまっていた気がします。

この12人が、後に立ち上がる札幌ADCのコアメンバーたちでした。

Hitoshi Yoneyama, photographer who is the same age as me, and I have often teamed up for various projects since my early days at ad agency.

Since the early 1990’s, he’s been to Sri Lanka several times and taken many photographs of local children. One day in1996 he asked me for help to make a calendar using the photos he took. He wanted to use the profits to support the local community in Sri Lanka.

When I saw his photographs, I felt comforted by smiles of children although I knew they live in extreme poverty. I expected the pictures to be something painful to see, however, what I saw were children’s cheerful faces.
When I heard their lives in Sri Lanka from Hitoshi, it reminded me of my childhood. Every day was an exciting new day even though we didn’t have enough clothes to wear or snacks to eat. It seems abundant products and information does not necessarily help a person find true happiness.

I cannot forget an episode which Hitoshi told me before. When he was giving out pencils in school, he noticed he didn’t have enough pencils for all the students. Then, students all said “if some others cannot get pencils, we all don’t need them.”

Pencils must be really precious presents for them. However, friends are obviously more important than a thing for them.
This story made me want to contribute to his project to support the town.

In order to broaden out our ideas, I consulted twelve other art directors. Each art director took a responsibility for one page design of a certain month. Therefore, every month ends up having different designs. Of course we all worked without compensation.

As a result of our five-year long project, we built two kindergartens. I feel our team members held the same goal in our minds and successfully achieved it together.

The twelve team members later became the core members of Sapporo ADC when it was newly established.
