タンポポの綿毛のグラフィックとともに制作した展望室エレベーター内の地図のグラフィック。
これもプラス・エスの古谷さんがプロデュースしてくれたもの。
タイトルも古谷さんが考えてくれたんですが、ちょっとかっこ良すぎて照れくさいですね。

札幌の地図をベースに、同じ縮尺で別の都市の地図を重ね合わせたもので東京、京都、ニューヨーク、パリの4都市を制作しました。
地図っていうのは平面ですがその都市のミニチュアみたいなもので、何百メートルもの上空から街を見下ろしている気分じゃないですか。
長い時間見ていて飽きないのは、たぶんその楽しさでしょうか。
ある意味展望室にいる状態と似てますよね。

ふたつの地図を重ねるアイデアは以前にも何度かトライしたもので、北海道の上にハワイ諸島を重ねたポスターを作ったこともあります。
小学校の社会の教科書か何かでアメリカの形の上にアウトラインだけの日本地図が重なってふたつの国の大きさを比較する小さな図があったんですね。
それだけでけっこう楽しめたのが記憶に残ってたんですよ。

良く知った街のスケールは頭に入っているので、そこに知らない街が重なると瞬間的にそのスケールを理解できます。
たとえばニューヨークだと、セントラルパークの大きさがすぐに実感できますよ。
反対に札幌を知らない人に札幌のスケールを感じてもらうこともできますね。

このグラフィックがあるのはエレベーターの中なので、ゆっくり眺めて楽しむ時間がありません。壁との距離も近すぎですし。
だいたい1分しか時間がありません。そこで、ニューヨークだけポスターにして展望室のショップで販売しています。

Artwork with map design for the inside of elevators for the observatory, installed along with the “Dandelion Compass.” This was again under the coordination by Ms. Furuya. She also decided the title, but it was maybe too cool and I’m a little tickled.

It was to over-rap another city’s map on Sapporo in the same scale. They were four cities; Tokyo, Kyoto, New York, and Paris. The map itself is in flat but it is like a miniature and makes you feel like looking down the city from few hundreds meters high on the sky. Probably it is why you don’t get bore looking for a long time. In a way, it is just like to be on the observatory floor.

I have tried to work with this idea, to over-rap two maps and made a poster with Hokkaido and Hawaii Islands before. I remember seeing an outlined map of Japan on the shape of the U.S.A. to compare the size of these two countries. This small figure in a textbook for my social study class in elementary school was fun, and I liked it.

You know the scale of a town if you are familiar, and so when some unfamiliar town is laid on, you can understand its scale easily. For instance, you can grasp the size of the Central Park looking at the one with New York City. On the other hand, it can be a time to sense the city scale of Sapporo for visitors.

As this artwork is placed in the elevators, it does not give you enough time or space to enjoy. It’s about 1 minutes while you are in there. So a poster is made for the one with the New York City and sold in the observatory shop. If you wish to take a time to look, please get it. It should be still in the shop, I hope.
