長女がまだ字の書けない2歳のころ、五十音のひらがな、カタカナに加え、
アルファベットの大文字と小文字、それと数字を、無理矢理ペンを持たせて書かせたことがありました。

小さい子はたいていお絵描きが好きなので、その延長で付き合ってくれたんですが、仕上がりは予想以上に面白いものでした。
一文字ずつ指さしながら描いていくんですが、時々判読できない形になると、同じ文字を何度も描かせることに。

ひとつの文字を続けて描かせると機嫌が悪くなるんですが、うまくご機嫌を取りながら何とか描き終わりました。
それをスキャナーで読み込んで少し太らせてからアウトラインをトレースして完成です。

小さな子どもにこういうことをやらせるのは本人の集中力が続かないのでたいへんですが、
子育ては苦労の連続なんだから、このぐらいは利用させてもらってもバチはあたりませんよね。

この文字は、けっこう気に入ったので、寺島デザインのロゴに使ったりしていましたが、
あるとき、とある保育園のロゴや簡単なリーフなどを作ることになったので使ってみることにしたんですね。

そうしたらクライアントから、この文字はもうほかで使わないでくれって言われまして。
まあ、そりゃあそうですよね。ロゴですから。それ以来、残念ですがこの文字は封印してます。

そして、このイベントにあわせてプロのデザイナー、イラストレーターの展覧会も企画しました。
「大人の想うサンタクロース展」と題したポストカードの募集でした。

今から考えるとずいぶん無謀なことをしたと思いますが、全国の名前を知ってるJAGDA会員に片っ端からファックスしたんです。
北海道のJAGDA会員だというだけで誰も僕のことを知るはずはありません。

ところが道内を含めて100名を超える応募がありました。これをやったおかげで後につながりの出来る人たちにアプローチできたんです。
東京の永井裕明さん、佐藤卓さん、富山のはせがわさんなどですね。

この展覧会は５年ぐらい続けた気がします。

When my older daughter was 2 years old before she could write, I tried to make her hold a pen and write Hiragana, Katakana, alphabets in both capital and small letters, and numbers.

Little children normally like to draw and so was she. She did try them and the result was much more interesting than what I had expected. I pointed out a letter one by one and she tried to draw it, and when it wasn’t readable, I made her to repeat.

She did not like to draw the same letter again and again, but I tried my best to keep her in a good mood to complete drawings. Then I scanned them and fat them a little to trace the outline.

It is difficult to make a little child to work like this, as she can’t concentrate so long, but raising child needs constant cares. So I thought that I won’t get punishment even I asked her this much.

I was pretty pleased with these letters and used as the logo for Terashima Design Office. One time I was working on the logo and a leaflet for a nursery school and used them, too.

That time the client asked me to not use these letters for others. It’s a rightly thing for them. After all, it is their logo. So these letters were sealed since then.
